Progress Ladder Feedback Grid for KS3 and GCSE Writing and Speaking for the 9-1 GCSE in French, German and Spanish
I have created this Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 writing and speaking marking feedback grid for the new AQA 9-1 GCSE and use it with general or assessed pieces of French, German and Spanish work.
The grid is linked to a progress ladder that we use in school, which shows the elements students are required to include to progress from grades 1-9 in the two skills in these subjects.
My school has been using it since October and I have found that it has really sped up my marking time. I circle elements that students havenât included and they must refer back to it before completing their next piece of written or spoken work. I also insist that my students learn these elements by heart in order and they have done this, which is definitely helping with an improvement in grades.
Hopefully itâs useful to you all as well! PLEASE REVIEW IF ITâS HELPFUL TO YOU!
GCSE French Listening Lessons By Topic
A bundle of French GCSE Listening lessons with:
9 native speaker French listening practice audio files (read by different native speakers)
verbatim transcript
5-6 activities for each topic
The aim of creating these listening lessons was to help intermediate or GCSE French students to improve their topic-related vocabulary, speaking, writing and listening skills. These GCSE French Listening Lessons cover all the main themes and topics of the AQA GCSE French syllabus and can be used to supplement the text book material. However, since the topics between exam boards are quite similar, these French listening lessons could also be useful as listening practice for Pearson and other exam boards too.
French Listening Lessons Included (with verbatim transcript, MP3 audio file (approx 2-3 minutes each and a number of useful activities):
THEME 1 (Identity and Culture Listening Lessons):
Family and Relationships
Social Media and Social Networks
French Traditions and Festivals
THEME 2 (Local, National, International & Global Ares of Interest French GCSE Listening Lessons):
My Town
Holidays in France
Charity
Environment
THEME 3 (Current and Future Study and Employment):
Jobs
French Education System
These are stand-alone âlisteningâ lessons for classroom work, as well as home-learning. All of these 9 French listening lessons can also be used as revision and completely suitable for grades 4-9 students at GCSE. They can also be used with slight tweaks for foundation students. As there is a transcript, why not also use for GCSE French reading practice?
ÂŁ8 for a minimum of 9 hours worth of listening related practice for French GCSE.
Need to convince your students on why to learn languages? This PowerPoint on why learn languages will be sure to help!
It includes 3 celebrities, the languages they speak, links to relevant video clips, useful quotes, as well as hard-hitting reasons on how languages open doors.
Having never used Quiz Quiz Trade cards before, I did a quick HOW TO Google search today, modified the layout slightly and made my first ever (simple) resource! Itâs targeted at year 7 German to go with Stimmt 1 Kapitel 3 for questioning and speaking.
There is an Excel and Word Document available in case you need to edit or add more easily.
Instructions:
Word Doc
Print the document and slice along each row (might need to duplicate for a bigger class)
Give one each to students and ask them to fold the German section over.
Students walk around and say the question to another student in TL (with or without looking at questions for differentiation)
If the partner doesnât understand they can ask for the question to be repeated/the German version to be shown/the English version to be shown, but they must answer in German as best as they can.
If the person asking the questions believes they have replied correctly, repeat step 3 and 4 with the other person asking their question.
If this partner answers correctly, swap cards physically over, move around and repeat steps 3-5 with someone else.
Feel free to modify and use however you like. This is just how Iâm using it.

Both from personal and professional experience, learning and being able to use vocabulary is a vital component to having confidence and being successful in communicating in any foreign language. Therefore it is important to teach vocabulary well to help students acquire and use the language, as well as develop that confidence.
I couldnât find a French pronunciation chart that was exactly what I wanted for my KS3 French and GCSE French students and so I created it.
The PDF document contains 3 sections to help students with their pronunciation of French sounds, some letters and common letter combinations that cause a problem. This includes: nasal sounds, silent letters and letter combinations, such as âuiâ, âauâ, âchâ etc.
